Evan Roth Smith on the numbers behind Zohran Mamdani’s win

Slingshot founding partner Evan Roth Smith reflected on the New York City 2025 Democratic Mayoral primary with Politico’s Joe Anuta and Emily Ngo, breaking down the effectiveness of the Mamdani campaign and the electoral conditions that led to Mamdani’s win. 

The campaign’s ability to win the trust of middle-class Black voters in Southeast Queens and Central Brooklyn is what prevented former Governor Cuomo from catching up once the ballots were counted. 

“This is less of a turnout story and more of a persuasion story,” said Evan.
